Manager – Municipal Community Garden – Guatemala City, Guatemala 2012 – 2013

  • Overseeing the production of the municipal community garden. The garden produces organic vegetables, chickens, eggs and fish for 20 different refugee houses that the Municipality supports.Also, the production of a variety of ornamental plants that are used to plant public gardens around Guatemala City.

  • Supervising a total of 50 workers that perform the daily tasks at the community garden.

  • Teaching weekly workshops on aquaculture, aquaponics, plant propagation, plant fertilization and landscaping to a myriad of students and visitors.

 Project Manager - Lindbergh Foundation Aquaponics Grant – Guatemala City, Guatemala 2012

  • Guateponix and Australian NGO Seres obtained a grant of $ 10,000 to build an aquaponics demonstration system in Guatemala.

  • Work included design, construction, operation and administration of the project.

  • An aquaponics construction and operation manual was written(Title of manual). Workshops given on how to build and operate a self sufficient  home/commercial aquaponics system

  • The system stocks 175 tilapias and demonstrates 3 methods of growing plants hydroponically. The system has space to produce 180 plants

Guateponix Co-founder -  Guatemala City, Guatemala 2011

  • Company that is dedicated  to the design and construction of sustainable food production systems.

  • The first system was built in the community of El Ahumado, Santa Rosa, Guatemala.

  • A total of 8 modular aquaponic production systems where built. Each production unit was stocked with 10 tilapias and 12 cucumber plants.

  • An incubator was built to produce the food for the fish. The incubator had 8 contatners where lemna, duckweed, algae and worms were produced and utilized to feed the fish.  

Construction - Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica 2010

  • Builder, manager and designer for a small “green” house using local wood.  Work included the design of the house. Managed part of the budget in order to make financial decisions.  Installed green technologies, including solar panels and rain collection systems. Performed work at all levels of the construction without electricity.  

Research Assistant- Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Fort Pierce, Florida,  2008 –  2009         

  • Research Assistant for the Aquaculture division at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University. Worked with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission for stock enhancement of the Florida Estuaries.

  • Worked with pilot scale studies of nutrition, filtration systems and densities for Red Drum Sciaenops ocelattus. .

Production Tech 1 2006  

  • Production Tech 1 for large-scale hatchery.  Promoted to Senior Tech 1 and supervisor of brood stock as well as an assistant for larval rearing in the same large-scale hatchery.

  • Managed co-workers who assisted with daily tasks. The brood stock area that I supervised consisted of 20 re-circulating systems.   The inventory of species in the brood stock area is around 1,020 specimens. I oversaw the breeding of 9 species of fish and one species of shrimp.

  • Worked in the larval rearing area, where Artemia and Rotifers were cultured to use as live feeds. A total number of sixty 120g tanks and eighty 40 g tanks were used in this area. The larval area has an average of 60,000 fish, but at was increased up to 100,000 fishes.  A total of 18 species of fish and one of crustacean were breed in this area.

 Laboratory Assistant-Florida International University Miami, FL 2005

  • Worked for the Southeast Environmental Research Center in their Sea grass Ecosystems Research project that monitors the population of different species of Macro-Algae in several Marine Protected Areas in the lower Florida Keys.

  • Work Performed included the field collection and classification for the following Calcareous Species of Algae: Halimeda, Udotea, Penicillus, Rhipocephalus..

Community Service

  • Volunteered with Un Techo Para Mi Pais in the emergency construction of a house after the storm Agatha in July 2010.

  • Helped in Haiti after the earthquake of 2010.  Organized the collection of items, taking these from Puerto Rico to Haiti, and contacting community leaders to deliver in strategic locations where the help was needed.  Performed several interviews and presentations of the work and experience through international radio and university lectures in Puerto Rico.

  • Worked in a local community in Guatemala, Concepcion Las Lomas, with the victims of hurricane Mitch. Collected food and clothing and helped to mitigate the psychological and social effects for children in shelters.
