Engagement documents

Below are three different blocks of various types of engagements I have had during this project. The first block contains various documents pertinent to this project: emails, meeting notes and forum posts. The most important to me are the Activity Hub proposal (last) and  Simha:Andrew email E.R.E.S (fourth). The second block has linked Google docs of notes from Skype meetings with the Activity Hub team. The third block is Google docs notes from my main advisory meetings with excerpts that are related to this project.

Advisor Meetings

Below are the links to my Main Advisor meetings with extracts that are pertinent to this project. Advising meetings are a very important part of my pathway. My advisor is a soundboard who can give me pointers and a different perspective. This allows me to step back and re-assess my position and check my frame of reference and next steps.

Advisor Meeting links and extracts

  • Simha/Saskia 07/29/14 - Main Advising Session➚ - Ext. - Frustrating to get other associates to engage.  Tried to get a page on design.  Also engaging with Latin American group, helping them with Mahara skills.  Posted on Mahara forum to let them download.  Someone responded to enable that.  Could import from Mahara to website.  Have not reached back out to Andrew.  Feels like another big project.  Took it into his own hands to get group together.  Ava responded trying to get people involved.  Should have exceptional OPs as examples.  Not sure if they are allowing just any OPs.
  • Simha/Saskia 08/26/14 - Main Advising Session➚ - Ext. - Had meeting with Andrew about activity hub and came up with some great stuff.  Live chat on Mahara.  Wrote to developer to work out bugs.  Added a google doc to main page for people to make suggestions.  made animation for the first time.  Design challenge forum where people can help out.  Community exchange website, going to be reimplementing that.  Creating extrinsic motivation.  Worth an OP?
  • Simha/Saskia 10/10/14 - Main Advising Session➚ - Ext. - Next OP: considering a few things.  Doing a lot of work on the activity hub.  Will have another meeting with Andrew soon.  Will become main platform on Mahara.  Meeting with other associates to work on it. How does it fit into LIPD?  Addresses teaching, architect of GU

E.R.E.S. Screen shot

Below is a screen shot of the Mahara Sandbox (prototyping) site I have been working on. I created the E.R.E.S. logo at the top of the page and the button icon below that. I have prototyped several other pages like the Gaia Radio page and a the Gaia U institution page. I was also instrumental in getting the chat plugin implemented which you can see on the right hand side of the page. I have created an account on the Mahara developers to post in their forums, to make connections and to inform the developers of improvements I see as beneficial to Gaia U.

Google hangout Sandbox meeting

Below is an eight minute video that I edited down from the 1 hour meeting I had with Jacki and Ava on Nov. 4. It gives a glimpse of one of the Google hangout meetings that I initiated, focusing on the use and function of the Mahara Sandbox site. Yes, we have fun while working! You have to watch to understand.

Annotated Resources

Below is the RSS feed of my UI bookmarks with annotation. These resources have helped me to articulate principles I was already using but had not identifiedand. They have also given me new tips and ideas, some of which are more pertinent for the scaled-up project of designing E.R.E.S. International, the multi-institution network. If you have any good UI resources please attach them to a comment at the bottom of this page, thanks!

More resources

In my peer review I was asked for more resources and I found this site which offers free ebooks. I have yet to explore this huge resource for UI/UX design but it looks good. Download books here - http://www.uxpin.com/web-ui-design-best-practices.html

Below is a map of the various places within the Activity Hub with details of each place's purpose.

Activity Hub map

Below is a mind map that I produced when Andrew asked me to make a road map for the Hub. This is a traditional SWOC analysis with the addition of goals and next steps. Having these types of maps is a great record to share with a development team to ensure you are on the same page as well as to get feedback and contributions. I also created a document brainstorming the four components of a system - Properties (Aims), Principles (Strategies), Patterns (Structure), Processes (function) attached below.

Mid Year Presentation

Below is a mind map that I made to help structure my mid year presentation on this topic. Below the mind map is the Prezi presentation I created as a visual for this presentation. I was not particularly pleased with my presentation, I need practice. You can watch the full 18 min presentation if you would like on youtube here➚. I have attached feedback documents from my mid year presentation below.

UI Principles for workshop design

I have mentioned how UI Principles can be applied to workshop design. My advisor encouraged me to including an example. I created the PDF below with as an example.
