This page 1.5 Annotated resources is: a list of the resources I used for designing this project and OP, with an explanation of how they were helpful, and RSS feeds from two of my bookmark folders for further resources.

Site Analysis and Best Practices

Below is a list of web pages I used for this project and what you will find at each, click the underlined text to visit the site (a new window will open).

Evaluating your site for solar energy:

  1. Build it Solar's page Solar site survey give an overview of the process with downloadable versions of the two documents you need to this Solar Azimuth survey.
  2. RimstarOrg's Azimuth tutorial video on youtube makes the azimuth solar survey process very clear (a must).
  3. Rimstar's web page on finding True South is helpful to understand the difference between magnetic and true south, and how to find true south

Design Considerations

  1. SustainableSources PS design page covers many different models of passive heating/cooling, from direct to indirect systems, solar chimneys and more. This page gave me a good bases on PS theory.
  2. Eco Jaunt's Trombe Wall Explained youtube video is a good explanation of a trombe walls components and operation. This is the video that introduced me to the origin of the PSP and its potential to passively cool.
  3. Wikipedia's page - Trombe wall gives a good overview of the PSP and it history, leading me to explore more about its originators. This led to tangents on other PS application such as the Solar updraft tower which is fascinating.
  4. Build it Solar's DIY Space heating page has an abundance of information and many different PS projects with diverse applications.
  5. G. Scott Davis's video - Designing the Ultimate Solar Hot Air Collector gives information on PSPs including material specifications, like what type of insulation to use. This video is focused on performance and evaluation as well.

PDFs for Passive Solar

I have many PS PDFs on my Permaculture Resource page here. Below I posted links to the PDFs that were most useful to me with a short review.

  1. Build it Solar's Solar Chimney 8 pg. PDF has some good illustrations covering both simple and technical PS systems
  2. John Sylvan's Passive Solar Design 45 pg. PDF booklet is a thorough, well designed document with illustrations and tables covering; native people's use of passive solar, application of different materials in PS, Net-zero homes and more.
  3. Joseph A. Ahearn, 90 pg. Passive Solar Handbook for the The United States Airforce, is a very thorough well illustrated document. It gave me yet more understanding of different dynamics of PS and design consideration for various circumstances.

OP Outlines

My last two reports were exhaustive and lacked clear form. I created two outlines to assist me in improving my process and outcome of this report. The first outline is a general outline that I compiled from the T2 template and the PoDAPO review guide, the second is my specific outline for this report.

Writing Documents

The writing bookmarks in my rss feed (right column) were useful in helping me understand what should/should-not go in the different sections of a report, particularly for the summary and conclusion.

In order to articulate design principles I refer to David Holemgrin and Bill Mollison's Design Principles. This can be seen on the last page of this report 3.3 Index of design principles. In order to identify some of the patrix memes this project addressed I used a document on Anti-patterns from the public sphere project.

See RSS of OP example bookmarks (right column) for some of the OPs I referenced for this report. The first ones are build projects and the rest are research I am doing for my Year in review OP5.

Bookmark RSS feed

Below are RSS feeds bookmark folders of mine. Using https://my.xmarks.com/ I have created these feeds which will update as I add / change bookmarks. To see all the bookmarks (with descriptions) in the folder click the title with the RSS symbol next to it.
