This page outlines my meso-project bee-keeping and its micro-projects. It shows the design process, my outcomes and conclusions and explains the next steps

Appreciative Inquiry (optional)

To design my micro-project Natural bee-keeping I used the Appreciative Inquiry framework. First I defined that my project is about natural bee-keeping. I discovered several appreciations but also challenges which the bees are facing in a global context today. On this mindmap I just summarized the key outcomes. I dreamed about how the situation could be and what would be the best to happen. Based on my dreams I started to design what I could do now in order to take a step towards my dreams and I decided to deliver specific micro-projects which I outline in this OP.

Micro-Project: Biotope for bees

The first micro-project in the meso-project Natural bee-keeping is a typical land-based permaculture design using the design framework GaSADIM (Goals Articulation, Survey, Analysis, Design, Implementation, Maintain). The entire design process for the biotope is available here as well as in the Supporting Evidence. We started designing the biotope for bees/insects during a permaculture planning weekend at the Lebensgarten Steyerberg. For more details see the XMindmap "Permaculture planning weekend" on the right and the German Survey and Analysis Document.

Detailed description
The permaculture park was the client of this micro-project. It has been decided that on a specific area a biotope for insects should be created. They are aiming to increase biodiversity on this relatively little spot which is surrounded by monoculture fields. The small biotope is also meant to be a resort for humans. Therefore we designed natural seating accommodations to invite people to relax and observe. The biotope is next to the community and there might be many people walking through, because the permaculture park acts as a demonstration site. The biotope shall consciously or unconsciously sensitize people to the importance of intact ecosystems. People are also invited to think about the surrounding monoculture landscape in comparison to the created biotope. Maybe this motivates people to grow more plants in their surroundings or influences farmers to sow blossoming stripes next to their fields. And as I already outlined in my LIPD:
If many little people, in many little places, do many little things, they can change the face of the earth” (African Proverb)
It might take a while until one can recognize the change on a wider local or national level, but I am confident that change will happen.

My primary achievements
  • becoming more familiar with design processes
  • designing and implementing a biotope
  • practical skills: setting up a lasagna garden bed (for building instructions please have a look here or in the Supporting Evidence) and a dry stone wall

Principle outcomes summarized

  • design frameworks can help to reveal, increase and bring into action the real creative capacity in humans
  • ecological value and importance of creating wildlife habitats

Next steps

  • expansion of my design capacities (creative human being)
  • learning more about how to design small wildlife habitats and growing plants

New goals

  • connecting with a network called “flowering landscape” to increase biodiversity on a more expanded level
  • learning more about fodder plants for bees

Micro-Project: Weaving a Sun HIve

The process I use to illustrate my micro-project "Sun Hive" is called the "Rapid Learning Cycle". It consists of the following steps: Plan, Design, Build, Test, Review. In that micro-project I had the intention to find a bee-hive made out of natural materials, where you can keep bees as naturally as possible but also have the possibility to control them if necessary. To read more details about the process, please see this document.

My primary achievements

  • Finding a bee hive which is mostly made out of natural materials and connects traditional with modern knowledge
  • Gained skills in weaving a basket
  • Experienced people explained to me the characteristics of a Sun Hive

 Principle outcomes summarized

  • Rediscover and revive traditions → people like it because it is a non-industrial product (nearly completely hand-made)
  • Sun Hive arouses enthusiasm makes people use more natural materials

Next steps

  • Finish my first Sun Hive completely
  • Read more about the usage of the Sun Hive

New goals

  • Weave a second Sun Hive and become more familiar with weaving this way
  • Find out if there are more handicraft skills which I would like to learn

Micro-Project: Learning theory about bees

To expand my specified knowledge about bees, I tried to use the method of ArCEA outlined in the GaiaU Online Orientation (ArCEA-method explained below). I applied this method to almost every theory of bees I have heard or read of. Especially during practical work with bees at PaLS, where I have the role as a support person I learn a lot of theory which I can "Expand" (see ArCEA) afterwards. Because it is a very time-consuming process I did not manage to use ArCEA as frequently as I wanted to. I am still in the process of finding an appropriate plan for every-day implementation.

My primary achievements and outcomes

  • Gained first experience in using the method ArCEA.
  • Learned more about how to work strategically with texts.
  • Challenging: very time-consuming process

 Professional Outcomes

  • Gained some valuable knowledge in different methods of bee-keeping.
  • Additional knowledge might help me in the future to increase the awareness of people and eliminate some destructive patterns in bee-keeping.

Next steps

  • Find an appropriate implementation for the every-day usage of ArCEA (more strategic!)

 New goals

  • Apply ArCEA automatically

ArCEA explained (optional)

ArCEA stands for Active reading, Critique, Expand and Act.  Here I describe my first attempts to use this method:

 Active reading

  • Skim the text (deconstruct) and write down the key words
  • Read the text and draw a Mindmap (reconstruct) with the help of the key words you wrote down

Critique

  • Is the train of thought in the text valid and plausible?

 Expand

  • Expand the Mindmap with my own thinking and other sources

 Act

  • Experiment with knowledge in reality or in imagination
  • Review Mindmap after 24 hours
  • After one week: Start with only the tangle knot and add the key words from your memory to evaluate what you still know (things you do not know → add later in a different colour)
  • After a month: Do again what you did after a week

With ArCEA I hope to strengthen my knowledge over a long period of time. I will gain more specialized knowledge in things I am actively engaged in and I want to learn about. So far I tried to deepen my knowledge in bee-keeping, soil building and theory about earth-sheltered greenhouses.

For me the combination of expanded Mindmapping and practical work is a great way of action learning.

Permaculture planning weekend (optinal)

Personal Outcomes (optional)

  • Increased appreciation for nature.
  • Humans as a creative being: Designing nature is a powerful process, because people have the power to influence for whom this place might be attractive = landscape design needs to be carried out responsibly.

Professional Outcomes (optional)

  • I gained a general understanding of designing → the first trials were a bit bumbling, but after a lot of reflection and strategic design attempts it became easier
  • Designing as a process-based planning (some designs might not work in reality, so keep adapting your design all the time)
  • Get to know a different type of garden bed and implemented it (Lasagna bed)
  • Some general knowledge about plants with high-nutrition value for insects
  • Basic knowledge about dry stone wall construction
  • Get to know different types of windbreaks

Political Outcomes (optional)

  • Monocultural landscapes are omnipresent in the current situation.
  • Providing a biotope for bees can make the public attentive towards the importance of a high biodiversity.
  • In the long-term a higher awareness can reduce the monoculture landscape around us.

Personal Outcomes (optional)

  • After weaving a basket I was very satisfied. It encouraged me to strengthen my handicraft skills.

  • Simple work with natural materials and a beautiful outcome make me happy.

Professional Outcomes (optional)

  • Gained first experience in how to weave a hive.

  • General understandings of how to use the hive.

  • Mixing an appropriate clay-mixture to make the hive more resistant to weather.

  • Theoretical knowledge through experienced people.
