AMERICAN INDIGENOUS AND SENOI

This two traditional groups value the dreams and have included the nature of dreaming in community life: the American Indigenous first nations people and the Senoi of Malaysia.

A principle difference between these two groups is how they use the dream.

American indigenous groups have a deep and intimate contact with dreaming. They use the dream in rites of passages rituals, in self protection and to understand the symbols through the interpretation given by of Shamans. To speak of American Indigenous first nations is one generalized way to talk about a people that are in reality divided between many different ethnic groups, in which the knowledge from different specific cultures has been lost through oppressive wars in the genocidal extermination through colonialism, and through both deliberate and accidental infections from Eurasian diseases. I have taken here a general view, separating the differences between the tribes when it is possible.

The Senoi are a people of the Malay peninsula that used dreams to overcome the challenges of everyday daily life in order to understand what is the connection between the “awakened” life and what information the dream is offering. Also, they have sophisticated ways for overcoming personal issues of fear through using the control of dreaming to overcome dream issues and how it reflects upon the “awakened” life of each personality.

The Senoi method has now been transmitted by some ethnologists, making it possible for us to know about their approach. They have inspired many researchers and led to the creation of many methods that use dreaming to develop greater consciousness. The Jungian Senoi method developed by the Jung Senoi Institute of Berkeley, California is one of these.
