5P Goals

As is standard practice at Gaia University, I set out my LIPD goals in the five areas of personal, professional, peer, political/patrix, and planetary. Below are the descriptions I gave for each of these. At the time, I made an effort to define them using the SMART framework of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. For simplicity in tracking, I’ve migrated my goals to this spreadsheet where I also provide my assessment of outcomes.

Goal	Outcomes
Personal: I will continue the path I set during my pre-capstone phase by building my understanding and practices of spiritual, physical, and intellectual development. Spiritually this means improving contemplative practices and aligning actions with values; physically it means maintaining or improving fitness and health and growing my skills in practices (such as dance, yoga, and acroyoga in my case); Intellectually it means improving thinking processes and gaining useful knowledge.	Spiritual: I've maintained a regular yoga asana practice of approximately 3x per week, and added a kundalini of about once a week as a form of meditation/pranayama. Physical: I did not track any specific body metrics but had a comprehensive physical that indicated I am in prime health; I moved into the advanced salsa classes by early fall, but then dropped the practice for a while due to shifting priorities; I reduced all physical exercise in general as I prioritized the completion of my degree. This will change once I'm done. Intellectual: –OP 5 tracks my considerable intellectual development.
Professional: I will continue to develop as an ecosocial designer, identifying where society’s needs overlap with my skills and interests; I will continue to build my network of like-minded associates while refining how I market myself to clients; I will improve my educational design skills and create opportunities to teach Ecosocial Design to people from all walks of life. This includes the creation of an integrated curriculum that distills best practices from my favorite methods.	–My business plan, marketing materials, website are in the works, and is somewhat dependent on emergent circumstances. – I ran a public education course and a series of workshops and webinars. These will continue. – I've proactively built my contacts and developed my relationships, including being invited to sit on the advisory boards of two organizations. –I have a tentative offer on a teaching position at a university.
Peer: To strengthen and grow my network of friends and colleagues. As I enter this new field, to find mentors and allies who can support me and to support those who benefit from my help. As a friend, to remain present in important relationships and approach interactions with an open heart. As a father, to continue to support the growth of my children as they transition towards adulthood, providing guidance and discernment while suspending judgement. As a husband, to grow and evolve in love and partnership.	– I've grown my network of peers through collaborative projects. – I've gained some new friends while other friendships have languished due to shifiting priorities. – I've developed a few select peer relationships with people who have specific skills and knowledge in fields that are important to me and who could be mentors. – I've continued to mentor others formally through teaching and programs like Watson Institute and Gaia University, and informally through certain relationships. – I've worked on my open-heartedness but also had some difficult firendships this year. – My parenting skills have been strong this year as my sons navigate the trials of late adolescence. – It's been a challenging Fall in my marriage as my wife and I have been confronted by stuck patterns in our lives that interfere with our progress, both collectively and individually. Tackling these has been hard and also immensly rewarding.
Political/Patrix: To improve my recognition and response to Patrix patterns in my own thinking and to continue to identify and share ways to break myself and my community free of these. To improve my literacy around alternatives to the exploitative economic models that dominate our culture; to create and support opportunities and examples of social and environmental justice; to seek ways to move political discourse from a focus on problems to a focus on possibilities.	– I've detected certain Patrix patterns in my thinking and behavior and been called out for others. I've worked to correct these through my personal attentiveness and through therapy. – I've taught Patrix recognition and response as part of the various courses and workshops I've run this year. – I've conducted deep initial research into alternative economics. – I've supported social and environmental justice initiatives as an educator, mentor, donor, and board member. – In my teaching and public speaking I always strive to frame information and solutions in politically neutral ways, emphasizing the power of visioning and to highlighting pathways to positive futures.
Planetary: I will continue evaluating and reducing my environmental footprint and build on the progress I’ve made in the areas of reducing my fossil fuel use, reducing my dependence on animal products, transitioning my family’s energy usage to renewables, increasing growing my own food, reducing my water use. Similarly, I will seek ways to enhance the positive social impact of my actions.	– I've maintained a home energy use schedule that allows me to maximize the utility of the solar panels I installed a few years ago and the use of my electric car. – I've stopped consuming dairy milk, and have switched to a vegetarian diet before 5pm, reducing my animal product in take by an estimated 66% to 75%. – It's been a bad year for growing my own food, but I maintained my garden beds to continue enriching the soil. – I've striven to be more visible and verbal about my pro-planetary actions and thinking.

Reviewing my goals and assessing my outcomes confirms to me that these goals have been a useful way to maintain consistency in my actions and achieve results. I’ve made steady progress in all of these areas, and considerable in some. When I have failed to make progress or have even lost ground this has served as an indicator of problems in my approach, my thinking, or my life balance. Further, as an ecosocial designer the specific tracking of the 5-Ps assures that my attention is directed where it needs to be to advance my intentions of social and environmental regeneration.
