What design method did I choose?
I’ve chosen to use the basic framework for Outputs 2-4 on the GEL site. Within that framework I added some items from the Gaia University Mahara Portfolio site, OP’s 2-4 Template and guidelines. Next I fulfilled the PoDAPO criteria in the framework I laid out for myself. I utilized the PoDAPO (Presentation and Organization, Design, Action Learning Skills, Process skills, and Outcomes) criteria and made sure my design reflected it.
What design framework did you choose?
GASADIE (Goals articulation, survey, analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation) was my overarching design method with outlines and mind maps also being tools that fit into some of the steps within GASADIE. I also used the action-learning spiral (do, reflect, think, design) and repeated several times. These are methods I’m familiar with and it works for me so I continue to use it.
Goals articulation-
I want to provide a Permaculture Design Course that utilizes the
Socratic method. I also want to make sure students are engaged in enough content to cover the entire 72-hour curriculum.
Survey-
I spent several months with mentors, auditing their classes to learn more about the teacher’s side of their classes. I also had weekly office hours with them to understand their approach to teaching. I spoke with them about identifying the over arching ideas and how to develop a set of questions from the content being taught.
Analysis-
I developed criteria to go by and worked on getting the big picture.
Design-
I created an exam that I can use to help engage students in the subject matter.
Implementation-
I have designed the implementation of the course I intend to teach.
Evaluation-
I can begin evaluating the effectiveness of the course and my participation in it as soon as it starts. As it progresses I can make any adjustments necessary. When I proceed with the course I will get student feedback and use their feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of the course. I can then revisit my original goals to see if I’ve achieved them and then re-design the course as needed. Continually learning how to teach.
