~ Life Update

Not much has changed since the submission of my last output (OP 4), as it was submitted in the beginning of August.  I do have a blooming garden behind my house in the city currently and I would like to make this a future topic for my Capstone year, with an emphasis on Urban Ecology.  I have been working hard to get the piece of land into working shape and discovered my first tomato of the very late season!  I am excited to move into my last phases of my pre-capstone year and begin prepping my E-o-Y presentation.

~ Abstract

This output is to give a review of the work that I had done in my pre-capstone year with Gaia.  You will find an assessment of my skills, management of time and the utilization of my resources.  I have also incorporated my review of the 5 P's and a specific design methodology just for this output packet.

~ Goals

My goals for this output were to:

  • Reflect
  • Deconstruct and reconstruct thoughts and processes
  • Identify tools and strategies that were a common theme throughout the year
  • Address challenges and weakness
  • Discuss the growth of my learning/skills

~ Incorporation of Feedback

I have incorporated a section in my project review that denotes the references I found useful throughout the year for the creation of my outputs.  This was something that was discussed with my main advisor to elaborate on.  I was also told to go a little bit deeper with my next steps so I am going to try to do that to an extent, but at the same time I want a few things to be fresh for my Capstone LIPD.

~ Managing Time and Promises

In this section you will find the notes on my time management throughout the year and for this specific output.

For this specific output I had scheduled a brief Advisor meeting that helped me discover a few key elements to include in this output and to develop some of my next steps.  I am using a calendar as a main tool of scheduling my time as well as using the  'plans' tool on the mahara site.  It has helped me keep track of things and hold myself accountable. I could have started to work on it a little bit sooner or pay more attention to it, but I think some of the questions that I had needed to be answered before I could continue forward.  In that time though, I went through and read at least 3 or 4 other associates Learning Reviews and I thought that helped me a great deal.

I feel like overall, my time management throughout the year has been exceedingly well.  I have submitted all of my OP's on time with minimal distress and generated a good piece of work each time.  Once again, I will be submitting this OP exactly when I thought I would be and I only have a few more next steps to be complete with my pre-capstone year.  I think my self-motivation has been a successful tool when it comes to managing my time as well because I want to show people what I have done and make myself and my family proud.

Below I have included timelines to show the progression of  my time management throughout the course of the year.

Output 4/ Output 5 Timeline

~ Skillflex Assessment

Here I have gathered the professional skills that I have acquired or built off of throughout my pre-capstone year.  I have taken my skillflex assessment from my LIPD and each individual output after that to create my current skillset xmind.  The xminds are displayed consecutively from LIPD, 2, 3, 4, and lastly Output 5.

Some of these professional skills tend to combine with my peer, personal and project goals. The skills that I have and the skills that I desire to have will help me achieve my highest potential in life.  They will help me: give a public speech (maybe in another language!), organize and facilitate, check-in with others and myself, expand my critical thinking and receiving as well as giving constructive criticism.  I feel like the skills are very well-rounded and can be sought out in many different area.  They can help with building a community, starting a women's group, initiating a gathering, running for the green party, building a garden (especially in the city).  To me those examples are a variety of peer, personal, professional and political pathways I can take with the skill-flexes that I have or desire to achieve.

Best practices noticed

This is a compilation of practices I noticed for me to achieve some of my best work, or a better working environment:

  • Take 10 minute breaks from the computer
  • Create deadlines
  • Create and use check-lists
  • Get outside!
  • Say yes, and mean it
  • Say no, and mean it
  • Check in with others and self
  • Utilize resources
  • Ask for help and support!
  • Demand less, request more

LEARNING JOURNAL EXCERPTS

Sources, sources, sources! Next time I would like to dedicate more appreciation towards my sources and resources used.  I would like to include an annotated bibliography within each of my outputs that is created.  I felt like I had used a lot of great resources throughout the year but hadn't given a lot of attention to them and merely just used a works cited.   With this discovery however I have chosen to establish a piece that grabs a few of the most powerful sources that inspired or inhibited my outputs throughout this year and make an annotated bibliography for them and present it in this Learning Review.
