This output is compiled into 4 tabs.  It is meant to be read in order. The first tab is filled with more Gaia specific material, it is labeled as the commentary.  The second tab is the core report, and the last tab is used to document my supporting evidence. The last page has recipes.

~ Participation Records

I feel like I have made efforts to reach out to people within the Gaia community this cycle.  I have scheduled a session with my Advisor on January 5th.  I also have been communicating with another Gaia associate, Simha, and we have plans to skype after the new year as well.  During this cycle I also had an interview session with a former Gaia student, Gabriel Bridges on mushrooms.

I attended a Gaia radio call on Raising Children in a Permacentric Society.  I really enjoyed this radio call and found it to be full of resources. This radio call also left me in a state of reflection on my pre-capstone year and the Teaching with Intention output that I did.  It made me want to re-address some of my previous desires on children and permaculture in the classroom.  This was more of a fleeting thought and I am still mulling on this idea.  Even if it doesn't turn into an output, I feel like it helped forage a connection between the presenter and myself.  I have plans to reach out to Amber and try to work on a collaborative piece with her.

I will also be attending two more Gaia radio calls during this project cycle.  One will be another PODAPO series call and the other will be the poetry slam and I am really looking forward to that one because it will be a different layout and experience all together.

It has felt great to step back into the Gaia world this cycle. It has reminded me how truly great each person is to this university and how it functions.

~ Abstract

This output will be centered around harvesting wild mushrooms and will offer tips and tricks for when you're mushroom hunting.   I will also focus on the social permaculture you can incorporate into this hobby.  In this project phase I will try to grow my own Oyster mushrooms indoors in a bag below my kitchen sink. During this output I will attend a 4-day Mycology Convergence in northern Illinois and I will share information that was gleaned from the experience.

~ Life Update

As the winter months are settling in, I have found myself doing the same.  After getting my hands started in a lot of my project work it has taken a turn into a time of reflection.  I have finally found my voice for writing my experiences that coupled with the projects I engaged in. I am excited to dive into this output and share what I have been working on over the past few months.  It will also be a new year next week and that excites me deeply.  It will be a time in my life where I focus on my 2014 year, and what I would like my 2015 year to hold.  I like to use Jon Young's template for this process called, Renewal of Creative Path.  You can check it out if you're interested in doing it yourself by clicking here.

~ Managing Time and Promises

I had originally chosen to follow the January 1, 2015 OP bus, however it had been challenging as I had noticed periods of non-performance over the holidays.   I have also decided that it is okay if I deviate from my original track as I planned for contingencies along my Gaia Journey.   With these challenges I have also had a great deal of support.  I have used the plans tool to help me stay on task and I have found it to be helpful to have generated a set of questions, and ways to track my work.  I feel like it was the right decision to hold out on submitting this output until February so I could generate a better piece of work.

As for promises, I have held myself accountable for being more involved within the Gaia community.  I have scheduled skype sessions with other associates and plan on talking with my advisor soon as well.  I also will be hosting my middle of the year presentation in the next few weeks.  I plan on hosting radio calls as well but have not yet come up with topics that I would like to discuss.

LEARNING JOURNAL EXCERPTS

Elements that influenced my work were from the area that I was living, type of mushrooms, the people I was reaching out to and the time of the year.

The location I am still living in is Stevens Point, in central Wisconsin. Stevens Point itself has a few wild life areas and some good hiking/biking trails that are free to rummage around and explore. These locations don't have a lot of motor traffic so the soil doesn't encounter a lot of pollutants. There is a lot of invasive buckthorn on the green circle trails, which is one of the more popularly traveled, although this didn't seem to hinder the production of edible mushrooms.

To get into the Kingdom of Fungi would be an incredibly lengthy journal entry, so to keep it short, the most common mushrooms that were found on our excursions were in the mycorrhizae and parasitic kingdoms. The mushrooms being: hen of the woods, chicken of the woods, chanterelles, and morels.

I was reaching out to my local community for the mushroom excursions. There was little regional interaction by using websites to help identify mushrooms and discover locations for good mushroom picking.  Majority of the people I got together were acquaintances as well as a few new community members. There was not much diversity present within my foraging group and the ages were roughly 18-38 years old. The most people I had gone out into the wild to forage with was a group of 10.  We kind of paired up and separated into our own areas and then would gather back together to share and help identify.

We started mushroom hunting in the late spring but it wasn't until late summer and September until I was actively going with a group on a regular basis. I will say that some days we thought would be perfect for finding mushrooms left us astray. However it wasn't always the case and majority of the time we did not come back empty handed. We had a later summer this year and it didn't really warm up as much as it has in the past and I think this also altered mushroom production. I am excited to go foraging in the spring this year.

~ OP Design Methodology

I have chosen to use the GoSadimet Design Method for this output.  The reason I went with the GoSadimet is because of the addition of the: survey, maintain and tweak into its process.

Goals:

  • grow mushrooms inside
  • find/create a local group of mushroom hunters
  • host a wild harvest dinner

Survey:

  • look around the area for good foraging spots
  • clean up if necessary
  • find a spot in the house or two that would support mushroom growth
  • find places in town to post fliers

Analyze/ Asses:

  • self-forage the internet for information
  • compare knowledge from the commons
  • develop ideas and possible mentors

Design:

  • find a design method
  • create actionable steps
  • create plans and tasks using mahara
  • turn ideas into projects

Implement:

  • make an output
  • grow mushrooms inside
  • post flyers in community
  • go mushroom hunting
  • have a harvest dinner

Maintain:

  • check in every day
  • use a calendar for specific dates
  • create a routine for indoor growth watering cycle

Evaluate:

  • are my projects, goals attainable
  • what skill-flexes am I addressing
  • who else is doing similar work

Tweak:

  • what amendments, if any, need to be made
  • what would I do differently next time

~ Cumulative Process Reflections

I have learned that the more engaged I am within Gaia the more beneficial my work becomes.  This project cycle I have strived to be actively engaged in the Gaia community, whether it be attending radio calls, having a skill-flex session, or just checking in with other associates.  This process has helped me manage promises and manage my time efficiently by keeping my word and making my schedule work around Gaia rather than vise versa.  In the past I had let me work interfere with my opportunities with school but I have come to the warm realization that my work will support me going to school and taking time to attend radio calls or be involved with Gaia.

I had thought that I made SMART goals for myself however I haven't paid any attention to foreign languages and I told myself 15 minutes a day, every day.  I think I need to start even smaller with 5 minutes to get myself into a habit.  I do think it's a good observation to note that I was not having success with 15 minutes yet and I am proud of my ability to adjust when necessary.  I also had originally wanted to get on the January 1st bus for this output and I am so grateful that I held off because I have been able to get more specific in this output packet.

My last session with my Gaia Advisor was really beneficial.  I was able to take a lot of action towards his feedback and he helped me take some next steps to complete this output packet to the best of my ability.  I really wanted to hold off on the submission of this output packet in January because I had really wanted to hear feedback from my advisor before moving forward.

I have made efforts to disseminate my work by making it publicly accessible for all to see.  I also send out an email with my secret links to close friends and family that are potentially interested in my work.  When I attend workshops or other social gatherings I definitely talk about Gaia and the work I am doing and share as much as I can.  I now plan to submit my secret url link to the All Gaia Community forum for every one in the Gaia community to check out.  I also plan to get more involved with the activity hub and getting my stuff up and running on there.

The highlights and the edges of this output are kind of combined this time around which makes it even more of an exciting sharing experience.  I feel like I am a pretty independent person and can get a lot done on my own time, this is because I feel like working with others can become more of a hindrance rather than be supportive. This output packet I have focused heavily on collaboration and mentors.  This has helped me introduce a little bit of social permaculture into my work during this cycle.

OP PROCESS REFLECTION

This section is used for any final reflections on the entire OP creation process.

    1. Learnings:
I think in the future I would have liked to interview more people on their thoughts of mushrooms and foraging for them.  I enjoyed that I was able to hear about other peoples' experiences and talk with them about that.  I wish I had been a little more prepared to take the conversations even deeper.  I had a few people that opened up on their thoughts, experiences and reasonings that I have cherished for this output.  This conversation will be shared on the second tab in the Core report.

    2. Goals:

    3. Incorporation of Feedback:
I haven't received any feedback yet for my last output I submitted. I should hopefully have my professional reviews by the time I get to my peer review for this output packet.  As of now I am choosing to go off of feedback from my peer reviewer of my last output and using local people to get feedback of my current work.  After having a meeting with my main advisor it was suggested that I utilize more of my learning support budget and to find a mentor.  He also felt like my last output was very word heavy and to try to use more sources of media.

    4. Dissemination Efforts:
I have shared my work with my local friends and community by hosting a mushroom hunt as well as a potluck to indulge in the harvests.  I have also attended the Radical Mycology Convergence where I was able to chat with people throughout the mid-west about Gaia and Mushrooms. This output is how I will be disseminating my work to other Gaia associates about my experiences and learnings I obtained during this project cycle.

~ Skillflex Assessment

This isn't addressed throughout my work specifically but within my current career field I had been given a job promotion as well as a promising future once I graduate.  However I have put a lot of thought into my life lately and what I want to do.  You know, what is my 5-year plan?  This has stemmed because of my partner moving to France and so we have talked in great depth about our values and goals in life.

Below you will find a chart that I have made to measure my skill-flex growth during this project cycle.  This is the first time I am putting this model into effect.  I enjoyed using it as I am a visual person.  I think however that I need to print them off and have the sheet readily available to fill out because I felt like there was probably more growth that could have been addressed.  It is clear to me that I focused a lot on the area of written/communication and sustainable agriculture during this project cycle.
