1.4 The Manual

The Manual

This page gives you an embedded view of the teachers manual below and some tips on formatting. The embed of the manual below is from Slideshare. The manual has 8500 words with 18 illustrations. To see it in a full-page view, click the white box (with arrows) in the bottom right corner.

Formating options

One key things to remember when creating a new format is to keep the original document and work from a duplicate.

  • PDF:

A regular PDF format is a great way to share your manual. There are many places you can host and disseminate it for free:

Having a Table of contents (TOC) is also a nice feature to offer with your PDF. I use Mac Pages to write my manual which doesn't have the option of creating a TOC. I used an app called PDFOutliner➚ ($4.99) which creates a TOC for PDFs automatically. It takes a little tweaking to get it the way you want it, but is quite user friendly.

You can download the manual as a PDF from Foboko.com or Academia.edu

  • Booklet:
As an additional option I formatted the manual into a printable (folded) booklet, using the app Create booklet➚ ($4.99). The Create booklet app automatically reorders and formats the pages for you. This is a nice option for your readers to have your manual in a small hard copy format.

You can download the booklet version of my manual from google drive here➚. To print it, see printing procedures below.

So many people prefer the paperless version of eBooks now, which is the ideal format for mobile devices. I used the online tutorial here➚ to create my ebook. Google Play is a great place to host your ebook for free. It allows you to monetize your uploaded material as well.

  • eBook:
You can preview my manual as an eBook (ePub format) on Google Play here➚. To see the entire book you must press buy, in the bottom right corner (even though it is free).

Printing procedure for booklet

The printing procedure will vary depending on your printer. Once you download and open it, go to: File - Print - Click the field that say Preview and select Layout - in the field Two Sided - Select Short-Edge binding from the dropdown menu and Print. If you do not have this two sided option, you will go to the Preview field - select Paper handling from the dropdown menu - In the Pages to print field select Odd only and Print. You will need to know how to orient the pages putting them back into the printer, and then go through the same process. Select Pages to print: Even only and Print.
