OP5, Pre-Capstone Phase Bachelor "Integrative Ecosocial Design" & Permaculture Diploma

sicht1

Summary

Welcome everyone to my last Output Packet (OP) in my second Action Learning Cycle of the GaiaU program "International Permaculture Diploma" and the Bachelor "Integrative Ecosocial Design"

This OP is a cumulative review of my second Action Learning Cycle, that now, almost took me three years (instead of one year). Filled with life transitions this cycle was of great significance for my personal and my family's development. Starting the cycle being pregnant with our first child, building a temporary home, visiting possible future places and buying a 2.5 ha big property I am ending the Learning Cycle being pregnant again and with a clear vision for our future. I am grateful for all insights from this Learning Review, that enable me to give a realistic outlook into my future pathway.

Purpose
Generally, a Learning Review has the purpose of successfully complete an Action Learning Cycle by reflecting consciously about the outcomes and learnings of projects and pathway. In my Learning Review I want to spend attention to the following points:

  • critically reflect on my second Action Learning Cycle
  • give an overview of my projects, OPs, and outcomes
  • show my personal un/learning experiences and articulate best practices
  • learn from my conscious insights: They will help me to shape my next Action Learning Cycle successfully
  • report about my learning edges I want to work on in the future.

For the Project "Learning Review" I used the clear Permaculture Process called SADIE (Survey, Analysis, Design, Implement, Evaluate). This process provides also the structure for the Core Report.

Guidelines for Reading

For an overall ORIENTATION please see the TABLE OF CONTENTS below.

It is not necessary to read the OP in its presented order, but if you do so, it is easier to follow and understand.

Most of my DOCUMENTS are shared through Dropbox. If you are logged in to Dropbox, you can see them directly.
Otherwise, click the button "Continue to document". All documents are linked directly in the text as well as in the section Supporting Evidence. There you can view all of my additional documents.

To enlarge the PICTURES just click them. They will open in Flickr.

All texts or graphics marked with 'OPTIONAL' include further information and are not necessary to follow the Main Report.

To NAVIGATE in this OP, use the tab on the top or click "CONTINUE REPORT" at the end of each page to go to the next page.

Introduction to the Project

"Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more reflective action."
(Peter F. Drucker)

Three project-related OPs document my transitions and projects of the last, three years. My life changed completely in comparison to the beginning of my cycle and I and my partner found our vision of a life we want to live. It now feels as the time of transitions is ending and we can settle on our place and start to build up our project and business. The time is ripe now to harvest all learnings from the incredibly rich time of transitions, and the project "Learning Review", documents that in a formal way. With that yield, I can start a new cycle with thousands of future ideas and challenges, and the learnings from the past will hopefully help me to move forward on different levels.

Reflection on Project Design (Optional)

What went well?
For the first two design phases, I was very clear what to do: "Surveying my learning cycle" and "Analyzing my projects and learnings". Relatively fast I collected all the material and started analyzation.
After the Main Advising Call with Laura Kaestele, I gained new clarity about how Design Processes can be used with two different approaches (read more in the Core Report: Two different approaches how to use Design Processes). I recognized that this OP is a mixture of both approaches and I consciously tried to identify them.

What was challenging?
It got more difficult when I wanted to enter the Design phase as I did not know what my "Design" is. In the end, I came up with the solution that I want to reflect on my growth as a (permaculture) designer. The same problem I had with the Implementation phase, as I did not know what I can implement in such a reflective project like the "Learning Review". So I decided to reflect on my growth as Action Learner.
Afterward I think that the two phases replenish each other completely, as a project always has both dimensions. Some projects focus stronger on design and others stronger on Action Learning, but often they are also balanced.

In general, it was challenging for me to integrate Permaculture in such a reflective project. I thought about many possibilities how e.g. to adopt different land-based methods to a non-land-based and reflective project.

Project Design Methodology

SADIE (which is the acronym for Survey, Analysis, Design, Implement, Evaluate) is one of the best known land-based permaculture design processes. With its clear, easy and concrete structure, it is very user-friendly.

For my project in OP4 I used a very similar design process for our land-based design, for more information go to the "design phase" in this report.

For my Learning Review, I decided for SADIE, because I am familiar with it and I wanted to try to use it for a non-land-based design. In the following I show how I used the design phases:

Survey:
The survey phase is about collecting information for an overall impression of a specific topic or project.
The Surveying Phase for my project “Learning Review” includes the following:

  • Collect information about my second Action Learning Cycle
  • Reflect on my general "Surveying Patterns"

Analysis:
The analysis phase is a systematic examination of the Survey. The main goal is to analyse and assess different components and consider the relationships and effects between elements. Depending on the project various tools and methods can be applied.
For me, the most important was to
relate my projects to permaculture. Through this, I can see how balanced and diverse my project work was in relation to permaculture.

  • Analyse with the help of the permaculture flower my implemented projects
  • Reflect on my analyzation skills

Design:
In the design phase, the ideas and components are chosen and placed to create beneficial and creative relationships and solutions for a resilient system.
Because my project “Learning Review” is reflective I want to reflect on my growth as
(permaculture) designer. I will examine the design skills I gained during this Action Learning Cycle.

Implement:
In the implementation phase an application, plan or model gets realized. Firstly this can include a realistic time and resource plan with manageable steps. Secondly, the implementation phase includes the real-life implementation.
As I am working on a reflective project I want to spend attention in this phase on my personal implementation strategies and reflect on my growth as Action Learner with the help of the Kolbs Model (experiential learning theory).

Evaluate:
The evaluation phase reflects how the design and planning correspond to the implementation and why things have changed.
As my project has no typical “Design” and “Implementation” phases I want to give a cummulative evaluation of my second Action Learning Cycle

  • Evaluation of different fields in my Action Learning Cycle
  • My evaluation skills
