Project SWOC Analysis

Skills I want to gain

Kolbs Model after learning

I want to expand my learning style towards more Reflective Observation (remembering) and Abstract Conceptualization (thinking).

Analysis

The analysis part is built on the previous surveying page. In contrary to the surveying part, which contains more general information, the analysis part outlines some concrete and realistic time lines and plans of where I am possibly involved in and what my intentions are to meet my goals. To meet these goals I am using four analysis questions: What is going well? What is challenging? What do I want to achieve? Next steps?

Integrate rather than segregate

The four questions

What is well?

Here in Steyerberg I have a lot of opportunities in terms of doing interesting projects with a lot of support. In spring and summer I will be participating in different workshops on the permaculture site. I have a lot of freedom in experimenting on the permaculture site and doing collaborations with others who are working in the project.

What is challenging?

Because of the many possibilities it is hard to decide what to do and where to start. That sometimes leads to overtaxing due to all the opportunities and my little experience. The result of overtaxing is doing all things at once but not deeply and well enough, which is very unsatisfying. The solution I see here, which is sometimes very challenging, is to set priorities, work with more structure and spend more time in preparation and reflection.

What do I want to achieve?

In order to achieve my longterm-goals and visions I now want to start working consciously and strategically towards them. For the next six months I definitely want to focus on skill-building in ecological land-design.

Use and value diversity”

For sure ecological land-based design is a very huge subject and I cannot work on all sub-subjects at the same time. So I thought, it would be helpful if I focus on a certain sub-subject in a certain period of time. Then, I want to learn as much as I think is useful for me and until I feel that I understand the main and more specialized patterns of this subject.

I want to have the biggest effect for the least effort. In a way that easily allows to work on different projects at the same time, which all have different focuses to meet my longterm-goals.

For myself I want to develop structured and efficient learning strategies, which help and encourage me to understand complex processes. For different projects, different Action Learning methods are required, so in the end I would like to have a clear idea about best-practices in Action Learning.

The focus of my learning-goals for the next half a year

Meta project: Building professionality

I figured out, that I will work on three different micro-projects:

Focus 1:

I want to gain deeper understandings of natural systems by doing research and active experimentation. To meet this goal I decided to concentrate on a soil project, which is a very complex subject.

Focus 2:

In another project I want to improve my practical handcraft as well as my design skills through participating in the design and construction processes of several buildings. By learning from professional people and actively helping on the building site I learn to assess the scale of different construction projects .

Focus 3:

Because of my increasing passion for bees, I will set the focus for this project on gaining basic understandings of the role of a bees in our ecosystems and of the nature of bees.

Next steps:

Design my projects in more detail with specific tasks.
