How do we organise in the countryside? When half the village is super rich, don't participate in village life etc etc etc? There's no city streets entrenched with graffiti here, no health centre to save from closure. So how can I organise? Be effective? What relationships are desired locally to move beyond capitalism?
13th April 2012
Just as mycelium spread nutrients & work together to support the health of an ecosystem, a social movement is like a web of connections - diversity keeps us resilient and our solidarity creates a powerbase, a healthier system.
14th March 2012, Second day of second half of Permaculture Teacher Training in Sussex
Had a dream last night about being on the sea shepherd.. Perhaps that's where my heart really is...? Feels so strange, like that's where my heart is. Had a dog run up to me this morning while I was taking a break & I just thought how many people are out there fighting for you eh?! There's a whole room full of people here that will be flying the permaculture flag so to speak, where am I really needed? What is my permaculture niche?
28th February 2012
I really need to get this zone 00 design implemented & anchored in my life. Tonight I felt so angry & stressed, I think I even scared my mum & I know I can't be nice to be around. She said I live like a dynamo.
I did a card reading last night & drew the salmon. Part of its description was that I’m trying too hard to reach my goals. Sometimes I feel I am.
12th February 2012 – Visioning exercise
Why do I think Lierre Kieth's book got so much support? Not because of the quality of arguments or well researched references that's for sure. It finally provided some rationalisation for abusive behaviour. People do not want to give up the privilege of eating animals. Its dominance in our psyches is thousands of years old. That is a lot to unlearn, to question and to challenge. Lierre's arguments finally gave those in the environmental movement a sort of quasi-internal approval for their meat heating habits. Entrenched in unproven personal drama around her health and veganism becomes the 'bad guy'.
This book blows the water on any rationalization of eating animals. Arguments have been meticously dissected and a vision of a compassionate world is presented. XXXX's chapter on the emotional lives of farm animals pulls the questions back to what can only be an ethical decision. When placed in this context, Nicole's vision of plant based permaculture and horticultural solutions across the planet, maximising the ecological roles of self-determining animals will be hard pushed to challenge. In her expectance of widespread discomfort at the challenge of the internal dominating mindset of animal slavery, Nicole has successfully covered her bases.
Becoming one of the most widespread books of the decade, new movements have formed around her arguments. The numbers of people going vegan is rising and governments are discussing subsidy options around animal farming. This may well be the next agricultural revolution.
13th January 2012 – Train home from first half of permaculture teacher training course – which triggered this output
Or am I starting to feel disillusioned with permaculture? Here we have this amazing design system with the potential to change the planet and its only application is for middle class people to do a bit of gardening and make things out of recycled waste. When are we going to really push for some systematic social change? I feel myself drawn to the strategic level of permaculture application.... what are the barriers to getting it implemented and how can we design around them? Where do we need to increase our leverage? How can we achieve social justice? How can we make our resistance more effective?
Here we are so aware of the entropy around us, the soil erosion, the cycles of poverty & abuse (ok maybe only some of us are aware of these) and the best we can do is teach a few hippies about design so they can maybe design their own garden or two and buy less crap?!
And then I guess there's the vegan stuff. Like just feel like I don't fit anywhere, there's no explicit ethic of animal rights in the ethics. They’re just lumped in the 'earth care' section when I feel there are differences.
