Ouput 1a: Life & Career Review

About Me

mewithmullWelcome to the profile of Nicole Vosper. I’m an anarchist organiser, agroecologist & designer based in Somerset in the South West of the UK.

I am working towards a MSc Political Agroecology, that focuses on how we can accelerate the speed & scale of a transition to agroecology. I am in my pre-capstone year

I have the westcountry in my bones and am blessed to share a four-acre family small holding called Brook End. I never grew up with access to land and so my life is one big learning journey in how to live in relationship with the land again that we have historically and violently been displaced from.

My main interest is how to dismantle and replace industrial and animal agriculture with systems that are life-sustaining and liberatory. I learnt how to grow food in prison during a 3.5 year sentence for my role in fighting animal testing, as part of the historic campaign Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty.

Inside I also learnt about permaculture, horticulture, environmental science and more. It connected the dots for me between the factory farms, worker exploitation, ecological devastation and health inequalities created by our agro-industrial food system.

I am also a passionate DIY herbalist & was involved in organising the first Radical Herbalism Gathering. I grow a huge variety of medicinal plants, make messy medicines in my kitchen & try to share with others what I have learnt so far.

I use my own website to share my learning pathway in completing the Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design and my work with Gaia University. In October 2012 I graduated with a BSc Integrative Ecosocial Design. Gaia University is the most radical education institution on the planet & has changed my life in untold ways.

My whole life is constant learning in radical community organising as I try to work on different strategic levels with different groups of people to meet their food, shelter, energy and social needs in ecological and socially just ways, as well as resist the relentless violence of industrial civilisation & capitalism.

I helped start & work with a workers cooperative called Feed Avalon, which works towards local food resilience of Glastonbury, Street & surrounding areas. We run grassroots projects, organise courses and events, and do a ton of local community organising. I now offer the majoriy of my design services through Feed Avalon.

I strategically focus on building agroecology and food autonomy, and resisting prisons and repression. I think until struggles can become more resilient to repression, they will always be squashed by the state.

Solidarity is what propels me & I’m interested in how this manifests beyond the internet and corporate social media. I centre my organising around supporting those experiencing repression, because I don’t feel people should ever have to face it alone.

I organise against prisons because they are our wounds and some of the most harmful places on earth. I think prison abolition is a beautiful thing.

On my own website - http://www.emptycagesdesign.org - you can see my learning, organising, designing, educational, research and writing work towards these goals in my life.

Advising Services

I have had the pleasure & privilege of being an Advisor since the beginning of 2013. I am able to support BSc and Diploma associates on their learning journeys with Gaia U.

My main areas of interest are:

Permaculture design - with experience in land based design, mainly smallholding & farm scale, with a specialism in plant-based systems as well as medicinal landscaping. I also have fairly extensive experience in applying design to non land-based projects, including regional food networks, educational systems, campaigns and grassroots projects.

Food Systems - including food sovereignty principles and organising, local food production & mapping systems, access to land, project start-up and popular education around the politics of the food system.

Community Organising - diverse skill set including group design processes, engaging with diverse groups of people, campaign strategy, event organising, listening & group facilitation tools such as Open Space, world cafe, popular education and other tools, burnout awareness, dealing with repression & more.

Project management & personal productivity - one of my most refined learning edges is project management, managing diversity and complexity with skill and grace through refined personal systems that enhance personal productivity, save wasted time & energy and optimise resources. I have a long term refined 'getting things done' system and can support associates to help design a system that works for them through the application of various principles & using tools from different tool boxes such as Getting Things Done (GTD), managing promises and more.

Technical skills & support - I can also support associates with technical aspects of disseminating learning online with support of skill flex advising on:

  • Mahara portfolio design & development
  • Website design
  • Blogging
  • Publication editing & freelance journalism
  • Using other IT tools recognised by Gaia U e.g. prezis, Skype and so forth.

Supporting action learning - My main passion is embracing action learning cycles to support associates to make the most of their Gaia U investments and to enable associates to capture learning from their life and projects.

In terms of qualifications I have undertaken the Gaia U Advisor Training, am a trained tutor with the Permaculture Association GB to support apprentices complete the Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design in the UK and have also completed a number of teacher training courses that have focused on participatory, creative and popular education methods of learning.

If you are interested in arranging any independent skill flex advising sessions please email me at nicole@emptycagesdesign.org

I am also open to energy exchanges and alternatives to financial renumeration.

Very nice indeed, on multiple levels from Earth to Cybersphere. Excellent use of what can be done with the mahara tech (and tech in general, as demonstrated on your website - Wild Heart Permaculture. Props for rocking it!

hello there, Read pieces of your op1a, wow!your 'river' includes a lot of wisdom. Be happy to do a peer review should you need one - don't expect one in return, mine is written more for my own sense of pathway and is lengthy. I am working on an Open topic Masters in Urban Agriculture, don't know whether this is similar to your own work but wanted to invite you to a working group on UA should you be interested. Its set up on Mahara and will send link if you are inclined. If not that's ok, but wondering if I could share your portfolio to one of my orientation guild members? She's not as handy on the computer but very talented with a guitar and know she would be very interested in how you incorporated music into you output! Take care and be well, Virginia Menstell
