CAP-OP2: Implementation & Evaluation

Working at home

Cherry tomatoes

Beginnings

As indicated in OP2 Y1, the area I have available at home is quite limited to 4 windows sized 135 cm * 20 per window, in addition to sunny glass room in the kitchen.

The building roof is still not a favorable option for the moment however I use it to place my compost bins during warm seasons .

I started in Autumn 2012 with only four plants, coleus, Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus), Brugmansia, and Heartleaf Iceplant. In spring 2013 I added some mature flowers and planted some seeds such as carnations, Vinca Rosea Little, Phlox, Portulaca parsley and coriander; and in Summer 2013 I planted cherry tomatoes.

More details are in the table in next page entitled Results.

Challenges

In general my progress in this project is very slow due to the following reasons:

  • lack of space, as indicated above
  • lack of time: as I am overwhelmed with my work and family duties at the moment.
  • my husband is not quite supportive to this hobby so he’s against adding new features for increasing available space
  • having little knowledge and rare sources of training (at least until recently)

finally difficulty in obtaining good soil: I used to buy big bags of soil from nearby nursery however it was a lot of trouble and the soil was quite poor in quality. For this I decided to wait till I succeed in making compost so that I would have a ready supply of fertile soil all the time. Hoping that by then I would have managed to add extra shelves to my kitchen.
