Learnings/Unlearnings

I've been learning Dynamic Governance through taking the Sociocracy course, metamapping the Holacracy Constitution, having discussions with two experienced Holacracy practitioners Lewis and Michael, attending a tactical meeting at The Integral Center, listening to two webinars from Wonderworks (a Holacracy consulting firm), reading Reinventing Organizations and We The People, and making a sample organization in the Glassfrog software (Holacracy organization and meeting software). I've been figuring out some of the key differences between Sociocracy and Holacracy and asking a lot of questions in the Sociocracy course.

I've made a lot of progress in web design over the last few months. I've learned how to set up a Wordpress site and add plugins. I've practiced using Mailchimp and Google Apps and integrated them into a website. I've worked with Simha on the Gaia U Activity Hub and talked with Tommy about integrating Mahara with other software for his project. I learned some about user interface design by listening to Simha's OP3 presentation. I've also played around with Loomio and Wordpress Project Manager to figure out how we are going to use them.

I read parts of the book Scrum and made a list of the basic principles which I shared with the incubator team here. I've been working on implementing Scrum both to develop the Regenerative Dynamics website and in the Incubator to allow the participants to design their own content. I am excited about this tool and thinking about different ways to implement it.

I've made a huge transformation in communication since my last output packet. I've stopped second-guessing myself as much, looking at things from other peoples perspectives and giving them what they need to connect with me. I have started to communicate about my projects more clearly and gotten significant interest from others. I've learned how to get what I'm seeking by giving to others. I've connected with several other Gaia U associates and give them support on their projects. I've been doing the same in the Integral Community, showing up and helping out with events. My skillflex of communication has improved tremendously and I am reaping the benefits.

I've had many opportunities to practice facilitation over the last few months. I got to lead the Financial Permaculture working group multiple times. I have been getting better at leading the incubator meetings. I've been studying how other people facilitate, such as Haile at the Local Food Enterprise Summit and Jennifer at the Gaia U and the NAPC, and reading Winning Through Participation. I'm getting more confident with my abilities and starting to let go of my belief that I'm not very good at being a leader or speaking in front of people.

I learned a lot about business design from the Local Food Enterprise Summit. I have been compiling the information I've learned from books such as Business Model Generation and Regenerative Enterprise and at Emerging Leader Labs so I can share it with others. We've been doing activities in the incubator like making one sentence tag lines and elevator speeches, defining our vision, mission, and goals, and talking about applying Permaculture principles and Holacracy. I've been helping other people with their business design and they have been really appreciative.
