None of these are new tools to me--I haven't had the need to find new software or programs, though I certainly will come  my project OPs.

Peer Contact and Participation

I have tried several times to connect with Gaia U peers over the past few months and it's proved very difficult. Time zones and schedule differences make calls hard to plan. I hope to connect with Charlie since I know him personally and we get along very well. Perhaps he can be a constant guild buddy.

Un/Learning Journal Entries

November 25

I'm getting anxious to start my projects! What's the antithesis of "paralysis by analysis"? Ceding before completing? Leaping before reaping?
It's just so exciting! And I seem to have left all the crumbly bumbly unfunny stuff to do at the end--but this was a good move because I would be daunted by the lack of overall completion.

This is what I really have left to do:

draw different diagrams of potential pathways leading from project OPS (branches, spirals….)

Descriptions of specific goals and interrelation to projects

Dunn Learning stimuli—OP planning?

Answer questions:

  • what do i want to learn?
  • how do i want to live?
  • who do i want to be a part of my path?
  • when do i plan to do all these things
  • where do i plan to do them?

on goals, skills, interests: add themes of all ops:

  • auto didaction pedagogy
  • lesson planning for self
  • self-discipline
  • promise keeping
  • intervention points (conscious)
  • change negative theories on life
  • trust instinct
  • remove negative voice from head
  • travel and expierntial learning
  • spend more time outside
  • better at taking care of friends and family
  • self-care, noticing stress and emotional imbalance.

November 13
I want to collect all the books I have on Landscape design and implementation and read them all. Take crazy amounts of notes, test out designs using other peoples’ properties (and give them the designs), and maybe use Spring Ledge Farm to play with plants. I could volunteer my time and learn HEAPS of gems I’m sure.

I need to look more at other peoples’ practices, experiments, etc. If I can find Gaia U associates or non-Gaia peers who are really good at this stuff, I’ld like to volunteer/intern with them. I need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and start from a higher level of learning. I don’t have to make it so hard for myself!

November 18

What’s going well?

  • Work: making money, keeping schedule, looking at Ragged Mtn jobs (would be awesome to ride, been dreaming of boarding a lot).
  • Jon: started shoe cubby project, has job that’s giving him new skills and making really good money. He got me a kitty, Mowgli! maybe Moguls.
  • School: very excited for all 3 projects, have planned them out pretty in-depth so they should fly smoothly, assuming not much else changes in my life.
  • Friends: made quite a few gooduns through work.

Challenging?

  • Work: don’t particularly learn much at my jobs. Kinda fun, kinda frustrating. Making ok money, enough to sustain.
  • Dreams of travel: when? where? why not NOW? Pete and Eric and Story and not knowing how to help

Dream?

  • Travel: refugee camps aid? South America volunteer? BC volunteer? Sailing with Kinley?
  • Landscape Design: harder knowledge of plants, etc; installing rain gardens, edible food forests, etc. for people of need and also for big businesses (i.e. airports to reduce their “carbon emissions”)

Next steps?

  • finish school
  • make $3-$4000 for travel by April
  • stop smoking and drinking
  • apply to Ragged or Sunapee
  • look at projects and visa requirements, grants and jobs
  • TESL or TEFL…

November 7

I really want to finish this cycle quickly yet fully. 5 months! Yikes!
Dec OP1A and B
Jan OP2
Feb OP3 and MoY
Mar OP4
April OP5 and EoY

I plan on spending December study time like this: Monday 7:30am–2:00pm; Wednesday 7:30-10:00am; Friday 7:30-10:00am. In total, I’d be working from 9-11.5 hours, give or take depending on errands, meals, and random appointments.

Come January, it looks like I’ll only have work MWF, no Tues and Thurs, Meaning I could structure 16-25 hours/week. This works well: my OP2 is practically already made due to my extensive documentation. However, my OP3 and 4 will require lots of thinking and experimentation time, as well as documentation and reflection. I want to focus on the essence of pedagogy for autodidactic learning.

November 3
It’s clear that I did really poorly last year on my LIPD. I didn’t get the point of it, or didn’t care to spend the time understanding it. I think that something about the timing during the Orientation Cycle of the LIPD seemed to be off and the information didn’t sink in properly (I’ve heard that from several other associates, specifically as a major discussion in an All-Gaia call). Now I get it! I’m also understanding more of the PoDAPO form. Making an xMind map of it was huge—instead of copy-pasting, I reworded the descriptions to make sense to me. It was HARD. Two suggestions for Gaia:
  1. Make every student do an xMind of the PoDAPO form during the Orientation using their own words.
  2. Rewrite the PoDAPO form to be less wordy and esoteric. Colloquial language would help, and I imagine this to be especially true for ESL students.

October 27

Having trouble with OP2. Trying out NASA’s design process:

Identify the problem:

  • there was no design going into the PDC, it was total mishmosh hodgepodge. How do I synthesize the information into a solid, useful piece?

Identify Criteria and Constraints:

  • Need to have design of OP and design of Project. Needs to be useful to others and provide guidance. Constraints: no clear design in project.

Possible Solutions:

  • Survey (what went wrong? what went well?), Analysis (why did it go wrong? why did it go well?), Design (an alternative/better way the PDC could have gone)
  • Reflector, Theorist, Pragmatist (have already been the activist)
  • Experiential Learning Model: Experience, Publish, Process, Generalize, (Apply) ****
  • Experiential Learning Cycle: Act (concrete experience, facts, what happened, theory of action) - Reflect (observation, feelings -what did i experience, assess behavior and consequences) - Conceptualize (abstract, findings -why did this happen, revise theory) - Apply (active experimentation, futures -what will i do, implement revised theory)
  • Engaged Learning Pyramid: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Creating, Evaluating, Analyzing (go backward?) (maybe just Remember, Evaluate, Analyze, Understand, Create?)
  • For design of next PDC, use Service Learning Cycle (pre-service, service, post-service)

Generate Ideas:

Tell story through Journal entries, annotated. Give brief description of background: site, energy, social, abstract. Use pictures and a Prezi to demonstrate timeline like I did for permie house design. Make evaluation spreadsheet from student feedback. Ask bruce/lark for financial info. Communicate with Stephane, Sebo, Sophie. Create model/overlay timeline of what COULD have happened—design better version of truth. Provide resources for course material and cultural integration of students.
