Rex Costello's OP5: Capstone Learning Review
BSc in Integrative Eco-Social Design
Page Intro
This page covers the basic orientation, purpose, goals, and project specification of this Output Packet.
Guidelines & Navigation
This Learning Review is the conclusive segment of my Gaia University pathway designed and shared through the Mahara online portfolio platform. Use the drop down navigation menu at the top of this page or click the "Next Page" (top right) to navigate throughout this OP.
Overview
Welcome to my Learning Review and final Output Packet of my capstone phase in attaining my bachelors degree in Integrative Eco-social Design with Gaia University. This output packet represents the culmination of my studies and project pathway as a Gaia U associate. This report covers the year and half long story arch, details, and design processes of my capstone phase which began in late July 2015 and came to climax with the manifestation of this project (Learning Review) in January 2017.
Purpose
- Document & assess projects, output packets, my pathway, and professional development
- Illustrate patterns and design processes related to my overall engagement with life & Gaia U
- Evaluate my skills, resources, relationships and how I integrate them into the framework of my life and pathway
- Share my insights, reflections, outcomes, and un/learnings from my capstone cycle
Abstract
- Specification - The page you're on now which specifies the goals, guidelines, and overview of this report.
- Core Report - Narrative assessment, Project detail, design evolution analysis, & Capstone OPs 1-4 abstract.
- Design Report - Overview on field of design & design methods in conjunction with how iv'e reflected and implemented them in my own work.
- Pathway Reflection - Details time & pathway management, guild & participation evidence, & learning journal entries.
- Supporting Evidence - Showcases media (photos/videos/music), professional outcomes, and hand drawn material displaying evidence of design tool implementation.
My Capstone phase has been an incredibly transformative cycle of growth, learning, and transition, filled with personal, professional and creative development. This learning review outlines my work as a growing professional musician, producer, band leader, and ever-evolving human, constantly learning from the many teachings offered through life and relationship. This Output Packet acts as a platform to structure my intuitive and often non-linear approach to design as shown through my projects, OPs, skill flex developments, methods, resources, and future steps. My key un/learnings focus around the topics of organization, time & project management, realistic appraisal and implementation of goals, design methodology, leadership, pattern recognition, relational navigation, professional development, and self-initiation.
OP Process Reflection
In some ways, making this report has been the most challenging output packet process to date. I feel this is mostly due to the fact that this is my last OP and therefore carries the most weight psychologically and emotionally. Its liken to running a long marathon, being so close to the finish line, knowing the end is in sight, but can't help the nagging urge to collapse from exhaustion and 'throw in the towel' before its over. I began crafting this OP based off of a design implemented by fellow associate, Laura Kastelle, as Jennifer English, my main advisor, (whom I will also refer to throughout this OP as Jen & Jennifer) had recommended I view her work in order to reference best practices. Even though I was overwhelmed by the high-caliber of her design models and overall framework integration I ignored my instinct to stay simple and instead chose to challenge myself by attempting to mirror her use of the 8 shields model as a central design system in relation to my capstone phase and apply it to my own OP5. After creating an initial draft and reviewing it with Jen, it was clear to me that I was causing myself extra stress and anxiety by trying to implement Laura's framework into my own and that choosing a more basic design layout would prove to be the most stabilizing and effective choice in proceeding to create my OP. After this realization, I created a new set of pages featuring the basic criteria for OP completion and proceeded to create the report you are reading now. Making Output Packets over the years has been a powerful process which has helped me hone my skills of organization, presentation, and self-reflection. My writing skills have improved dramatically as well, especially when it comes to consolidating large concepts and thought forms into clear and concise ideas and points. I am grateful to Gaia U for helping me to flex my skills as a writer, communicator, designer, active learner, artist, and inspired human.
OP Design
Process
For the design of this OP, I used a basic template layout based on essential requirements crafted by my main advisor, Jen English. At first I tried integrating a design model throughout the framework of the entire OP. After meetings with Jen and reflective analysis, I found that this initial goal was overcomplicating my process and so for sake of time and workflow I decided to use the simpler model and instead feature a specific page dedicated to the topic of design and my experience with it (page 3 of this OP). I laid out each page with sections headlining specified requirements and then proceeded to fill in the criteria accordingly. Personally, I feel that this straightforward, linear approach to OP creation is the most efficient and effective way for me to design and implement my output packet work.
Goals
My main goals in designing this output packet were to
- Present my report in a cohesive and well organized way
- Fulfill all requirements and criteria for a well-made, complete OP
- Provide a clear sense of structure and ease of navigation
- Share my personal process of design and how I relate it to my work as a developing artist and band leader
Digiphon
This OP was created using my Macbook Pro and photos provided by my Iphone 7.
All of my recorded music was made with the DAW Logic X, which is apple recording software I have installed on my MacBook pro. Before running sound into the computer however, the microphones used are the first to receive, which then flows through analog outboard pre amps and compressors, then is transferred through a digital Apogee interface called the "Apogee Ensemble" and finally converted digitally into the computer.

Feedback
The most obvious integration of feedback in regards to this Output Packet is exemplified by my collaborative efforts with Jen (my main advisor) to most effectively design and present this OP. In order to fulfill the design element criteria requirement, she also encouraged me to create the design section of this OP as my previous OPs have always been specifically lacking in this regard.
