How did I grow as a designer?

  • learned that every design process or model has its own approach which is very important for a sucessful process.
  • can' t swich the sequence without a reason or no proof that you can use another seqence
  • practiced to ask questions related to each phase of a design process
  • learned how a process can be used to work on one specific topic and is at the same time the structure of the OP!

OP 5 Process Reflection

Overall the OP-production and project process took longer than I thought in the beginning. I planned to be done within one months but in the end it took me more than two, which is okay because I had enough time left. It was more challenging than I thought to reflect about the year and write down the core essence. It feels that I learned so much but I did not document enough to read my ongoing process afterwards. In general it was challenging for me to summarize my written thoughts and write an OP with them. I would say that in the Learning Review I had the most sucess with that so far.
The purpose of OP to reflect about the first year and outline next steps is fullfilled and the reflection phase worked better than I thought.
By writing this OP I got motivated to collect ideas and inspirations I want to do in the next Action Learning Cycle, great!

Course on learning visualisation

Starting with my project (OP4, Education) of creating a learning material I found a lot of possibilities and ideas about how to visualize knowledge. I created the prototype learning material and started to implement the material for "resistant bees". After some days I had a clear idea how to structure and visualize the content, but I realized that my drawings not always looked clear and understandable. So I researched for an opportunity to learn visualisation and I found a fourteen-day online course. Every day the participants receive an e-mail and a new chapter is released. The course is structured with different videos, exercises and spreadsheets where I first can see the videos (summary of each video below the video), than I can do some exercises and work on the sheets. Each drawing is posted in a provided Facebook group to get immediately and individual feedback. The recommended time a day one should spend with the exercises of the course is thirty minutes This course should enable me to:

  • visualize knowledge clear and comprehensible
  • get practised in drawing and writing and find my individual style
  • get expert tips and best practices in drawing
  • learn more about how to create a flip-chart

Reflection:
At OP 5  Submission I just went through a third of the course, but I will write a short reflection about this course in the following:
The course provides in an easy digestible way the material. It is a lot of fun to see my drawing and writing capacity growing with the time. I always spend more than thirty minutes with drawing and additional research related to the topic. It is nice, that the teacher really started from the beginners level and encourages everybody to draw.

OP 5 Process-Steps

Here a short overview what steps I undertook to create OP5:

  1. I used the OP 5 Template to answer all questions and get structured the OP in general
  2. Then I decided myself for one design process which was "Appreciative Inquiry"
  3. I arranged the questions within the Appreciative Inquiry
  4. I rearranged Appreciative Inquiry  and adapted it more to my needs without knowing that it is actually not allowed
  5. After rearranging I decided to use Appreciative in its original sequence and adapted it to my needs
  6. Making clear the goal of Appreciative Inquiry and asking appreciative questions and answers which go with them
  7. Everything ready?! Proofread the text, analysing questions and answers-> Are they appropriate? Is something missing?

How I want to do it differently next time:

  1. Choose a design process as a first step and do some research about it
  2. Ask myself: How can I use the process for my work effectively? What methods and strategies do I want to apply?
  3. Think up for each phase some questions I like to have answered!
  4. Work through each phase and write the Core Report
  5. Analyse everything! What is missing? -> PoDAPO!
  6. In the end: Write Process Reflection and Summary
  7. Proofread everything and note what is missing!

My process during the course

In the beginning I just wanted to take a visualisation/drawing course because this skill should assist my projects in the learning area Education (learning material). I recognized over time that I can use my skills in visualizing content in the following areas as well:

  • Project Work in general and especially in my project of creating learning material
  • OP work: present my process and progress as well as set specific goals in the beginning and evaluate them in the end
  • Blog: visualizing content is a unique position feature and appealing to the reader

I really was not clear how many opportunities will open up with this course and I am now in the beginning and completely in the process of learning visualisation. The process is going on and I am expectant how I will develop this skill :-)

The poster on the top, called "OP creation process" and the concept-drawing of the right called "resistant bee-material" did I create with the help of the online course.
