This page - Project Overview - serves as a short introduction to the Core Report. It presents the permacultural method of Zoning, that I used to give a structure to my project work.

Project Overview

Interventions - Grouped by Zones

Intervening in an existing system is a characteristic feature of humans. And I know that my project work is full of interventions in different parts of my life. I tried to collect and categorize these interventions with the help of Zones. For a better understanding, have a look at the "Zoning Wheels" below. The zones show on what level (Personal, Family, Local, Regional, World) and in which system or topic I am making an intervention.
The result of my (and my boyfriend’s) interventions is explained in more detail at the end of the Core Report on the page "Results".

Zoning - Design of the Core Report

To design the structure of the Core Report of OP2 I used the permaculture method of Zoning.
The aim of Zoning in permaculture is to optimize the positioning of elements in a system. Zoning is often used to plan and design a property or homestead. Things are placed in the zones depending on how often we need to use the element and how often we need to take care of the element. In a typical design of a property, zone 0 symbolizes the house and with each zone, the radius around the house gets wider until it ideally reaches zone 5, the wilderness.
In my case, I adapted the zones to a non-land-based design where zone 0 is me and zone 4 is the world. I tried to place the different elements, relevant to my project work, in the different zones. So in the end, each element had a clear place and I am aware of the zone in which I am intervening.

Reflection on Zoning (Optional)

What was challenging?
It was not easy to design the Core Report. In the beginning, I was overwhelmed by the diverse elements I wanted to put into it. I experimented with various designs and structural processes, but they all seemed too confusing.

What was good?
I appreciated how I was able to structure the confusing elements and to unite them to a conclusive whole. When I tried to design the Core Report with the Zoning method, everything seemed easy and clear. With this method, I feel that I can express my project in a non-confusing way without over-designing.
Drawing the Zoning Wheels was a nice work of creativity.
