Annotated Resource Review
Belz, Frank-Martin and Ken Peattie. “The “Eight Cs” of Sustainability Branding”. Sustainability Marketing. August, 4th 2010. http://www.sustainability-marketing.com/2010/08/eight-cs-of-sustainability-branding.html
-This was a great resource that helped me build a framework for my output packet. It is a great guideline for anyone trying to build a business around sustainability.
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brand
This webpage gave me some better understanding of what branding is.
Arora, David. All That the Rain Promises and More… Berkeley. 10 Speed Press, 1991
- This resource has helped me learn so much more about mushroom identification. I always recomend it to students that want to learn more about mushroom identification.
Ashworth, Susan. Seed to Seed. Decorah, Iowa, USA. Seed Savers Exchange, 2002
- This resource has clear guidelines for saving seeds of several different species of mostly annual vegetables.
Cruickshank, John. Subterranean Heating and Cooling Explained.
http://www.sunnyjohn.com/indexpages/shcs.htm
- Unfortunately John Cruikshank passed away a few years ago. He was one of my teachers at my Permaculture Design Certification course and introduced me to Subterranean heating and cooling technology. He created this wonderful resource before he passed away. I am forever grateful that he took the time to create this resource. I just finished buildiing my third SHCS greenhouse earlier this year thanks to him and this website.
Cruickshank, John and Jerome Osentowski “Subterranean Heating and Cooling System”. Permaculture Design Certification Course. Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute, September 2005.
- I got to help install some of the hardware in one of these greenhouses when I did a worktrade for my PDC.
Davis, Mike. “Mushroom Cultivation.” Class workshop. Plant Pathology 40. UC Davis fall 2005.
Denzer, Kiko. Build Your Own Earth Oven. Blodgett, Oregon. Handprint Press, 2000
- A resource that I've read over a few times. Even though I haven't built one of these on my own yet. I am gearing up to create one and eventually begin giving workshops on the project. I've taken a workshop before where this was mentioned as the 'bible' of building earth ovens.
Jacke, Dave and Eric Toensmeier. Edible Forest Gardens vol. I and vol. II. White River Junction, Vermont, USA. Chelsea Green Publishing, 2005
- The value in this book is indespensible. I have used it so much that the binding is beginning to fall apart. This resource helps me have a better understanding of plants and all of their uses as well as approaches to design. I have been able to share much of my learnings in this book and my workshops will allow me more space to share some of these learnings.
Jeavons, John. How to Grow More Vegetables*. Berkeley. Ten Speed Press, 1995
- This book has given me the basis of how I grow a lot of my plants from seed. I utilize the cultivation practices and how to grow guidelines. This book is the basis for my seed starting workshop.
Lawton, Geoff. “Online Permaculture Design Course”
http://permaculturenews.org/2013/05/08/online-permaculture-earthworks-course-bonus/#more-9818
-I clicked on the link for this course and it didn’t seem to work. However this page has a comment thread, including some comments from Geoff Lawton. There are many good comments from people taking his course. Apparently there is a collection of online videos to accompany this course, something I’m not prepared to do myself, yet.
Mollison, Bill Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual.
Maryborough, Victoria, Australia: Tagari Publications, 1988.
- This book is what the PDC is based upon. I used this book to design the exam around. I was able to break it down into the overarching ideas so I could better understand the goals I want students to reach.
Millison, Andrew. “e-PDC: The Case for Online Permaculture Education”. The Permaculture Institute. July 12th, 2013.
http://permaculturenews.org/2013/07/12/e-pdc-the-case-for-online-permaculture-education/
-This article makes a good case for an online PDC. It inspires me to think about the possibility of designing the Socratic method into an online PDC. I also have been thinking about writing an article for the case for a Socratic PDC. I’d like to get some other permaculture teachers beginning to think about the concept.
Paul, R. and Elder, L. “Socratic Teaching”. The Critical Thinking Community (April 1997). http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/socratic-teaching/606
- I used this to determine if I was heading in the right direction and I could fulfill my goal of teaching using the Socratic method. After reading it I feel like I’m heading in the right direction. I will refer to this article often to help me facilitate my first Socratic PDC.
Ross, Valerie. “The Socratic method: What it is and How to Use it in the Classroom” Stanford University Newsletter on Teaching: Speaking of Teaching. Fall 2003 Vol. 13, No. 1. http://www.stanford.edu/dept/CTL/cgi-bin/docs/newsletter/socratic_method.pdf
-This is a great article to make one more familiar with the Socratic method. I will use this article as a reference to continually prepare and revise my approach to teaching a PDC with the Socratic method.
