REFLECTIONS

Behind the Scenes- Why I chose this Project

Much of my professional life is centered around health services (whether nutrition, massage, permaculture or teaching and advising).  This project represents a synthesis of the many professional hats that I wear on a level of walking through this life in a good way. We are looking at healthy ways to interact with our bodies and this planet and each other.  Health and lifestyle and happiness are perhaps my greatest passions.  Personally, I knew that setting myself up to share Best Practices and widsom regarding broad-ranging topics of personal health would improve practices within my own life.  Indeed, I find myself with steadier meditation, exercise, and many other daily practices.  Lastly, I feel grateful for the added clarity that I would like to examine how to become a more effective life coach.

Relationship to Applied TEST Permaculture Design

In line with my application for specialization, I have included the following sections:

  • 2.2.1 "The Field in context of Permaculture"  describes how this OP relates to Holmgren's petal of Health & Spiritual Well Being.
  • 2.2.1 "Design methodology" demonstrates how I use the design system of Permaculture to create this project on Health & Healing.
  • 2.2.2 "Relocalization" focuses upon that aspect of my thesis that relocalization is crucial to the permaculture movement as a whole.
  • 2.1.3 "Permaculture Principles" shows how I utilized Permaculture Principles throughout this project.

LIPD Reflection

I am very happy with the skillflexes that I have developed.  I certainly feel that I stuck to some of the broad strokes that I have in my life regarding attitude or approach to living and projects, including Compassion, Acceptance and Joy.  OP2 basically went off as planned which in addition to fulfilling many of the stated goals within the Output Packet section also facilitated my reading of books that I had hoped to read and writing articles and creating videos that I had hoped to accomplish this year.

Collaboration: Leadership & Cooperation

I worked with Jim Gallas and Minh for the Reiki training.  I was able to offer my perspective and insights and have these valued.  I feel this offered me the opportunity to be a supportive follower.  I tried to gain wisdom from Jim and Minh around leading a Reiki training.
Charlie Cascio and I worked as partners in the Land of Milk & Honey workshop.  We communicate well and play off each other easefully after working together for multiple decades.  Charlie is a mentor to me and in addition, we function as good partners.   Both Bea and Donna were helpers during this workshop and I assumed most of the responsibility regarding delegating tasks to them.  Both remarked that I did a good job leading the workshop and communicating with them.
Many different teachers/collaborators emerged during the 7 day herbal workshop that I attended toward my Herbalism Certification.  Miles is a great chi gong teacher with a light and airy ease that I would like to emulate as a teacher.  Nikki Paschar became a collaborator and we would have buddy calls talking about new product-making ideas.
On the technical side of the OP, my dad has been supporting the growth of the website.  He has recently finished teaching me to code in html.  This was good learning and some of the ways my dad expects communication to be done feels more efficient/business like than some of my friends who don't work within corporate America.  I enjoy that I am seeing patterns for making communication more effective.

MTMP

I renegotiated the due date back and back as life circumstances arose.  This felt very much in line with the philosophy of the OP of being happy and healthy while contributing toward goals and purpose.  The result is two-fold in that I had more time to make the OP better and I had a very happy approach to doing the work.   I do recognize that setting artificial deadlines assists me.  I am grateful to set them to inspire action and then change them to mitigate stress.   So, I am aware of a concept that promotes productivity in my life: "Intentionally Deadlining Aware of Intended Renegotiation."  (Incidentally, I use a similar trick of telling people I do something that I want to invite into my life as a practice.  I have found no more effective technique for myself in inspiring personal action than telling someone I already did it because in my brain I can rationalize that I didn’t lie if it shortly becomes true.)    Two great self deception techniques that I am grateful I can use to inspire growth.

Timeline

Replicability

As a zone 0 project, I think everybody's process will necessarily be distinct.  I do highly encourage researching perspectives on best practices and pattern to bring health & happiness into your life from ancient philosophical systems to modern day TED talks.  Certainly, one may fall upon different primary patterns and strategies than how I have articulated them; however, there is a general trend amongst the research to find between 4 and a dozen significant factors that are related to optimizing personal health.  Then, as we see clearly within nutrition or exercise, there are vastly different philosophies toward maximizing personal health.  I do contend that offering people your perspective on the major patterns to become aware of with a few Best Practices in each pattern/theme is a useful technique.

Liam as Project Manager

The few times I acted with others, I feel I made clear communication a priority and with each of my collaborators, time and energy was well respected and well spent.
For most of this OP, I was managing myself.  I am enthusiastic and grateful to my own process of managing my time.  I renegotiated due dates multiple times in order to create what I believe to be very valuable content AND I did it in a good way.  I predominantly was enthusiastic about "getting" to do this.  I am grateful that I created space for myself to express ideas and beliefs that have been stewing for decades.  I am hopeful regarding creating space for myself to create a book on causality and a parody of Troilus and Cressida.

Classic Gaia Questions

What went well?

I loved so much of this project.  I loved finding patterns in themes that have interested me for years: stress, happiness, exercise, nutrition, the pause, awareness.  This project has increased my own personal practices including exercise routine, time in nature and time playing.  I have felt very validated in both bringing together years of wisdom both in the form of this OP and in personal practices in my life.

What was Challenging?

Health is vast and all encompassing.  There are so many considerations.  It was hard to cap this OP in terms of what is connected to what.   "Everything is connected."  It seemed that whenever I achieved a framework, a new challenge/opportunity would arise.  This continually reminded me of the Buddhist teaching of the master who changed the rules at the monastery as soon as the disciples “systemitized them”.  I do believe that awareness and attitude are perhaps trump on this field as even good exercise and nutrition don’t stop broken bones or quinoa in the teeth.

What would  I do differently next time?

I am quite happy with my execution of this OP.  In my next lifetime (or as I move into the future), I intend to take better notes when I am living each experience of my life so that I have more substantial documentation to pull from regarding experiences of 1 - 20 years ago.  This often occurs to me as to "write down what seems obvious now."  As invariably, I seem to forget so much of what seemed so obvious even just a year ago.

What are my next achievable steps?

I hope to get all of this information up on my website and I am very excited that I have a framework to add new KEY insights in my life.  In addition, there are some articles that emerged while working on this OP that I hope to work on over the next couple of months/years.

LEARNINGS

Key Un/Learnings

  • Embracing healthy cleaning supplies
  • Increased awareness around my own exercise patterns including time of day and what I like to do.
  • Refined stress management techniques. Incorporating social support and empowerment.
  • Recognizing Patterns of Happy people -- primarily attitude and acceptance.
  • Embodiment of play -- including unstructured outdoor play time.
  • Greater connection on phone and digitally with friends and peers.
  • Implementation of exercise, breath and meditation (the space existed and when teaching others “how to be happy” the greatest learning ended up independently recognizing “how to be happy” -  this is a corollary to what I have always said: that the greatest part of being in massage school was learning how to receive a massage.)

This  attempt to bring together over a decade worth of experience within many fields of Natural Health Care  including nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, meditation, community, touch gave me substantial pattern level awareness around our personal ecology and maintenance.

Intending to coach others, I let go of the high level of refinement and look for the major patterns of health.  This is in line with my general philosophy around health as well in that I think very specific remedies are largely for very specific conditions; whereas, in order to discover and maintain good health, there are some preliminary guidelines/patterns that I think most of us should observe prior to very specific interventions like drugs and surgery.

Inspired to continue growing as an herbalist, placing myself in the role of a student at  the herbal seminar  offered me the moment to be in the first seminar where I wasn’t a helper or a leader in about 5 years.  This was very helpful and I recognize my own need to source support and growth from other teachers.

LIPD Accountability Metric Chart

Kolb Kite: Doing, Thinking, Reflecting, Experimenting

This OP for me has been a lot of Thinking and Reflecting.  The OP represents years of doing/workshops/work that in the now I am primarily reflecting upon in terms of pattern level awareness.  Some of the “doing” has felt fairly passive in that it has largely been watching videos, reading old notes, reading books and articles.  In addition, I created videos and articles so that I wasn’t solely in my head.  I also stacked functions by simulataneously working upon my Chocolate and Cordials OP  which is largely a doing and experimenting project.  Therefore, day to day, I was playing and experimenting with my brain even though this particular OP on Health was largely was abstract and heady.   The OP did inspire much play in nature and daily exercise of rolling and getting the energy moving.  This may have been partly inspired by the Kolb awareness of engaging my spirit/learning on many different levels.

Permaculture Principles

Design from Patterns to Details -- Consider major themes/patterns of health and start our maximum point of leverage insuring we are addressing basic fundamental human needs.  Allowing refinement and nuance within these worlds only after a pattern level is established
Least Change for the Greatest Good -- I contend that many people get wrapped up in one of these major themes, making highly refined nutritional shifts or compulsively obsessing around love without considering purpose in their life or a healthy exercise routine.
Diversity Yields Stability.  More relationships in our life provide resiliency and stability.  Diversity also points to awareness of patterns of health that we may create resiliency through awareness of many themes of health: relationship, nature, nutrition, exercise, purpose, attitude, awareness, the pause.
Everything is Connected:  Relationship rules supreme.  This includes our relationship to both our community (people care) and nature (earth care).   Both addiction and mortality are highly correlated with social isolation.
People Care:  Caring for ourselves and other people is foundational in our attitude.  Cornerstone of our lives.  Consciously develop several strong friendships and a community.
Earth Care: Highlights nature connection and natural remedies including herbal first aid kit and natural cleaning supplies.  Supports organic and local agriculture as positive land stewardship leads to better health as well.
Work with Nature: Use the healing power of nature in your first aid and in your daily routine to absorb the benefits of being outside: sunshine, fresh air, energy flows.
Catch & Store Energy: Utilizing the energy of nature through good food and nourishing daily practices.  Store the energy well in your body through good nutrition and time in nature and community.
Unknown Good Benefits: Following permaculture ethics and principles of doing for others and the community and the land yields a myriad of good benefits on our own personal health.
Relinquishing Power: In the purpose section, I contend that in relinquishing power to a higher spirit or to our community or family, this leads to increased health and happiness as we put our faith and trust in things bigger than ourselves.
The Problem is the Opportunity -- Embrace growth mindset and embrace the challenges in our life.
The Yield of the System is Theoretically Unlimited:  Optimistic design outlook.  With the right attitude, our health and happiness can soar.  We must believe in possibility with growth mindset.
