The experiental learning cycle: Kolbs Model

For my projects as well as for the Output packet itself, I decided to use an experiential (relating to or resulting from experience) learning cycle, called the Kolbs Model by David Kolb (1984). It is a very clear and not too complex design option, but optimal to play around with during the project work. I experimented with the Kolbs model by applying all different learning stages directly in its usage. In the following you can read more about how I applied it in the four different stages.
"Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience." David Kolb
The Kolbs Model is a four-stage learning cycle. There are naturally four distinct learning styles and everybody has preferred ways of grasping (CE & AC) and transforming (RO & AE) experience (show my Kolb Kite). I tried to increase my learning capacity and outcomes by going consciously through all different learning stages (individual Kolb Kite for each project). Learning can only be effective, if a learner executes all four stages of the model consciously.
The four stages of the cycle are:
- Concrete Experience (Feel, Do): having a (new) experience or a reinterpretation of an old one
- Reflective Observation (Watch, Reflect): review and reflect on the experience you just gained
- Abstract Conceptualisation (Think, Theorize): learning from the experience; reflection gives rise to a new idea or a modification of an existing abstract concept
- Active Experimentation (Do, Apply): plan and try out what you have learned

My Personal learning cycle (optional)
Most of the time I gain concrete experience only by doing something. My attitude was always that if I experience situations they will stick in my mind and it will be difficult to forget. And naturally I just like testing things and do them by myself.
"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand" (Chinese Proverb)
My other strong side is to experiment with things and thoughts. I simply like to play around with 'given' circumstances.
On the other side I am not very strong in reflection and conceptualization. So far it was just not natural for me to think more about these stages in the Kolbs Model.
So - according to the Kolbs Model - I was an accommodating person. By consciously going through all four stages of the Kolbs Model in my projects, I will expand my reflection and conceptualizing skills.
