Key Outcomes
1 Design as Meta and all pervading-- I find it appropriate that while several of the outcomes are tangible sheets of instruction for my next catering gig, there was no product (such as an event or a meal that was eaten) created during this design. The focus of this project is design, we can indeed design all things including how we design.
2 Feedback Loops are valuable-- creating space for improving upon what I don't know. Reflection --> Documentation. Gaining clarity on things I didn't know how to design but know I should be ready to when I get to camp in 2014: sseful laminated signs around kitchen, material data sheet on hobart, volumes consumed in cases and trays.
3 Some documents that were created are particularly valuable: 18 action sheets/including white board prep list for each shift, all desserts action sheet, the letter to employees ( I would say that the awareness of the communication is more significant that the letter itself making me more than employer/manager I would like to be.), Action sheets for time sensitive moments (including cooking shifts and set up days)
4 Awareness toward communication : This included communication with employers, employees (mentioned the letter above), facility crew, myself (mentioned feedback loops/reflection/documentation above).
Documents Created
The documents I created for this event are in the Supporting Evidence: Core Report
▪ Meal Action Sheets -- a descriptive list of volume and ingredients prepped and combined in each meal. More explicit for certain uses than a recipe but wouldn't tell someone who doesn't know how to cook what to do.
▪ Letter to my Workers -- outlines event, job responsibilities, shift hours, wage. My communication with potential employees.
▪ Letter to Facility Head -- clarity with the facility manager what I am expecting upon arrival at this site.
▪ All desserts -- lists vegan, gluten free, and other recipes for serving 220 people dessert for 9 days plus some other ideas in case I get creative.
▪ Template to improve designs of meals -- this output packet inspired me to establish a feedback loop where I could easefully take notes on each shift in terms of what happened, what went well, what was challenging, what would i do differently next time. My intention is to print out 36 of these to have 1 in the kitchen and 1 at the nightly chefs meeting for each shift. I am believing that this will be very useful.
