"Garbology," by Edward Humes, gave me a sense of direction when exploring the origin, history, and meaning of trash through a social lens. It is a fascinating book of facts and figures, both statistically and anthropologically. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the cause-and-effect of our trash legacy.

Waste Transfer Stations: A Manual for Decision-Making
This EPA manual was the most helpful. It is more concise though has a clear mix of both theory and praxis in designing Waste Transfer Stations. It also has a glossary of terms (on the first page of this report), state-specific considerations for the U.S., and operating standards. I've also pasted the brief version of the designs manual in the left column of this page as I found it very helpful.
Decision-Makers' Guide to Solid Waste Management, Volume II
This EPA manual is long (over 300 pages) though not everything applies to everyone and is easy to navigate to find the pertinent information. There are many examples of designs (for big to small towns and rural to city) with explanations of the steps for implementing designs. A very in-depth and clear manual.
