Goal of OP - Abstract - Navigation - Commentary on Previous OP - Review Forms

Statement of purpose

This project, Pay It Forward Farm, is focused on my home renovation process from January 2013 to June 2014. It is intended to be both a story, a resource and a thorough documentation of my house for my own reference and that of future owners.

I share my experience using Permaculture and design/build methods as a technique to mix modern, tech-based "green building," scavenged resources, and ecological design for a replicable, exemplary, and accessible project for other home renovators. Ideally, this documentation of my home will assist home owners in similar climates or those who have similar Cape style houses from the time-period (post World War II). It may also be applicable to those who are interested in a smooth, feasible, healthy, ecologically sound renovation process.

Abstract & Summary

Renovations are notoriously difficult. The emotional, financial, and physical stress deter home seekers from attempting it themselves and deter builders from offering an inexpensive estimate. As such, renovations have recently become a wasteful practice. It's much easier to "gut-and-chuck" a building or level the house and start anew.

However, renovations are extremely important for restructuring our current housing and energy crisis, rethinking our construction methods and staying connected to our culture and history.

In the past century, building and renovations have become widely inconsiderate of ecological and human health; rather, they are  dominantly focused on the economic bottom line, perceived or trending aesthetic, and ease of initial input.

There are methods to mitigate the stress and avoid short-sighted decisions. Although I have only the experience of fixing my little house in New Hampshire, I'm happy to offer advice and design assistance where I can. Feel free to e-mail me: sgviandier@gmail.com.
